Chromatest and myself are DJs at Fat Tuesday on Mill ave (in Tempe). We spin there every Tuesday but the next two Tuesdays are going to be special events you cats might enjoy.

This coming Tuesday (Apr 29) we are having DJs Louder and Matty as our guests. What is special about this is Louder is the biggest breaks DJ in the valley but he will be playing House. Also, Matty is one of the biggest House DJs in the valley but he will be playing breaks. They both are really great guys and a really fun crowd follows each of them. It should be highly entertaining watching them play each other's music.

The Tuesday after that (May 6) Krinabelle, a local artist is doing an art show. She is known for mixing mediums to obtain really wild results. The first Tuesday of the month is also "Burner Tuesday" when a lot of the Burningman and AZCacophony folk come out. If you don't know who I am talking about, think Idiotarod and Santarchy. If you still don't know what I am talking about go to http://burningman.com.

They both have different spins and they should both be fun and I hope to see some of you there!

To all of you who want to make Phoenix a better place to live, more beautiful to look at, more community minded...or for those of you who hate Phoenix, but are living here anyway...

Let's get together and do something that will make a difference! I've adopted a street downtown, much like the adopt a highway program. I've worked with the city and they've given me Van Buren between 7th St and 7th Ave...right at the heart of downtown.

I realize cleaning up a street and keeping it clean won't solve all of the issues we have in Phoenix, but if that act can inspire others to do other activities to build community and pride in our city...then my mission is truly accomplished!

Please join me and other Phoenicians for our kick off cleaning day on May 3rd! This will be a great way to do something for our community, meet other people interested in making a difference and of course, socialize. If you are interested, please let me know.
If you have crafty ideas to make this day amazing and fun, let me know!

I am a yoga instructor who just moved to Phoenix from Seattle. I like to work with people one-on-one and currently have lots of openings for new students. To drum up interest and community, for a limited time I am offering sliding-scale private yoga instruction, Reiki sessions, and small group workshops (I dig the barter system!). I am also creating a schedule of free and low-cost yoga classes in gallery and studio locations throughout downtown and in natural areas surrounding Phoenix. I have some beautiful spaces to work with or I can possibly come to you and help you create space for yoga in your home. Private instruction is a brilliant way to learn a lot quickly and to understand what yoga means to you.

I help you to create energetic openings with yoga postures and infuse these openings with energy healing. I physically support you as you explore the poses and often integrate other interests such as art, music, swimming, running, hiking etc, to create a practice that is perfect for you. This combined with visualization, meditation, breath work, movement and intuitive massage fills your being with an expansive peace and revolutionary change as the energy flows freely throughout your life.
Pictures and more info are available at people.tribe.net/airina

Ideal space would have one room around 20x20 feet in size or 15 x 25 or somewhere in the range. It needs at least one large, unbroken wall for wall mirrors. Raw or hard floors are best due to traffic from customers who come for consultations and fittings. It needs a bathroom (toilet, but shower/bath not needed) and its own entrance from the street. Parking should be able to accommodate a few cars in the event of group fittings/ small group dance practices. Weekday times are usually quiet, but evenings & weekend days I have more traffic of those needing fittings, design consult, dance practices, etc... thus, more noise.
That said, a private space, unattached to a residence is ideal. I am also a dancer and would utilize the space a couple of times per week for dance rehearsals. It doesnt have to be pretty. As long as it is big, clean, safe, and CHEAP it'll work fine. Office space, a studio, whatever. Anywhere b/t 7 ave and 68th st and b/t Camelback & Broadway is perfect.

I'm visiting the area this week, and looking for fun things to do. I'll be around until Sunday.

1. Nice restaurant recommendations, especially near Tempe, Scottsdale or Mesa...somewhere nice to take my Mom out to, maybe typical SW or fusion food.

2. Non-Mom oriented evening events...are underground thursdays still going? Other ideas? I like cosy pubs, outdoor, been a burner but into all kinds of grooves.

3. Arty stuff - people keep mentioning first fridays, is there a last fridays too?

Hey, all:

Well, after an enitre MONTH where I didn't play anywhere, it suddenly occurred to me that gigs don't book themselves. So I have two engagements this week at two different places:

Wedneday, Dec. 6: Stop by the big red clubhouse at Encanto Park, on 15th Avenue just south of the golf course parking lot! I'll be one of three acts playing sometime between 7 and 9. The usual jam session takes place first at 7, as I recall, and then the acts start at 7:30. (I think I'm on at 8. But show up early just in case!) It's FREE!

Then, on Saturday the ninth, I'm playing at a new venue for me and a newer venue for the Valley's folk coffee house scene, the Music Corner. It's located in a rec room at Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church, on the corner of 15th Avenue and Maryland. If this sounds a bit like Fiddler's Dream, it should. Since Fidd's rents space from the Quakers, the Music Corner does the same thing from the Lutherans. (However, there is no direct connection to the church. Anyone who's heard my act will know that!) Music starts at 7:30 with Jim Pipkin, who can write circles around you, me, and your dog without looking. He's really good. I'm on after Jim.

And just like the Wednesday night gig, admission to the Music Corner is a big fat NUTHIN' unless you wish to make a donation to keep the place going!

Also, if you're looking for the perfect cheap-ass gift for somebody for the holidays, I will of course have plenty of my CDs available for sale. I'll even be singing the one Christmas song I know, the one on my latest CD! It's my version of "Christmas in Arizona," written by my good pal Bill Blankenship and funny as heck.

So come see me this week. It's been a while, love to see you, bring the wife, kids, strangers with money, whoever!

Tom Chapin, long-time folk singer, entertainer and former TV show host will be making his third annual appearance at Fiddler's Dream, 17th Street and Glendale in Phoenix, on Saturday, Sept. 30 at 8 p.m.

Boomers will remember Chapin as the host of the cleverly-written educational program "Make a wish" in the early 70s on ABC. But Tom's a lot more than that. A talented songwriter and musician, his songs cover virtually every topic with intelligence, warmth and humor.

Tom's concerts also include a song or two from his late brother, Harry Chapin. This is a great show. Don't miss it! Tickets are $20 in advance ($22 at the door) and are available at Fiddler's Dream Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays during regular hours.

If you are attending the Natium show at Big Daddy's this weekend, and you'd like to buy tickets for Tom Chapin, let me know and I will bring some along to sell to you.

It's going to be a great show. Due to the expected crowd, the concert will be held in the Quaker Meeting House rather than the usual smaller Fiddler's Dream building. Same address though -- 17th St. and Glendale.

Don't miss it!
I become so insensed every time I hear/read these things. I get really pissy when I see you walking your dog, in the summer, on the pavement, but I get more disgusted when I see you walking your purebred (often equates to inbred) dog (although it is your preogative, I just wish when folks want an ego boost -look at my purebred chihuahua that I never intend to show- they would instead buy a fancy car or a new outfit). I get annoyed when I notice dogs and other animals not getting the loving care they deserve (it is your commitment to them). But the most agravating of all is when you dont spay or nueter your animals so that this over-breeding occurs.
Please, help our neighborhoods remain feral-animal free and SAFE. Donate money to those organizations who help the animals so that they can build more facilities (no kill shelters). And when you are ready to adopt, visit the humane society to ease the strain they suffer each spring/summer because of our ignorant human counterpart's stupidity.
Thank you.
Stepping off my soapbox now. (go adopt!)

I have an upcoming show in the fall. I am currently looking for new models. The body of work I am currently doing will be large photo transfers onto canvas or paper, which I will paint on. The work I require of a model will be a photo session.
I will then work from these images. You must be 18 years or older. I prefer someone who is not shy about thier body and willing to model nude or drapped, although some costumes will be used. No previous model experience is necessary. I like someone who can move freely, dancers are welcome. Also someone who is able to take direction is welcome.
It is not nessasary that you are "Pretty" (a fashion magazine type). I like flaws and diversity, I like an unusual look. I would also enjoy photographing more ethnic types. You don't need to be tall, it doesn't matter for the kind of work I do.
I work mostly with women, but would be willing to photograh men if thier look inspires me.
I work fast, I perfer natural light, I create a comfortable environment.
My usual arriangement is a trade of prints for your time. I require a signed model release.
I'm generous with my models.
um yeah...the pavement can reach temps of 100 to 120 and blacktop is even hotter.
just from my own experience; a petsitter took my dog out for a run one summer. my dogs paws (bloody, raw, burned, pink) took several weeks to heal and he was in a lot of pain.
another example-a friend was in an auto accident in which her vehicle rolled and the scared dog jumped out of the window, in summer, out onto the blacktop. this dog had to have all paws bandaged for months as well as be administered meds and antibiotics.

soooo, if i see you darling daytime dog walkers, i dont hesitate to inform you kindly "your dog's paws are burning."
if you ignore me or get irate with me about my kind advice, i happen to know of a certain sherriff joe and a posse who love to bust folks for animal cruelty. yes, i am that much of an animal rights person that i will make that call.
> Hey Pham. It's 2:30 am and I just got back. We won a major battle today
> but the war is far from over. They set up a road block Monday night about
> 7pm. No one allowed in, even if you already had a ticket, And anyone
> coming out was issued one and not allowed back in. Gigi was doing main
> gate and when they came in they confiscated his radio. Within an hour we
> had about 20 cars and rigs backed up so some of the people with kitchens
> in thier rigs started feeding the pham. Then we started a bonfire and
> started drumming. A few kids tried to sneak into the woods to go around
> the roadblock but there was leo's hiding in the woods and they were
> quickly nabbed. the main force of leo's left about 9pm after giving
> everyone in A-camp a ticket and anyone else they could find. They had a
> generator and flood lights at the road block but only left 4 leo's behind
> facing about 100 hippies who were all in good spirits when I stepped into
> the woods to answer nature's call and accidently found
> myself back in the gathering. Word quickly spread of family being
> stranded outside the block with no gear ( a lot of us were making supply
> runs when we got blocked out and all of our gear was inside) and in the
> middle of the night about 30 blankets appeared from nowhere out side the
> roadblock (thankyou ninja's). In the morning a few of our younger family
> members put on war paint and decided to try to get the supplies in that
> had been stranded all night. By then the morning leo relief crew arrived
> and there was about 4-6 leo vehicles and 6 to 8 giddyups( I was still
> inside the gathering at the time but got to listen to it unfold via
> radio). By the time the youngers got to the block (coming from behind)
> there was at least 60 -70 of them. And since people had been coming in all
> night long there was almost 200 people in front of the blockade. As soon
> as the bro's and sisters from inside the gathering arrived the cops
> started to freak and started pulling out their guns,
> shotguns and assault rifles, no lie, no tear gas guns, no pepper spray,
> machine guns pointed at the family. You wanna know how brave your family
> is?? How much this family means to all of us?? approaching loaded pointed
> machine guns and twitchy trigger fingers (the leo's were scared) they did
> the only thing they could do, they started to "OM" and quickly joined
> hands and continued to march towards the roadblock. The pham on the other
> side of the block realized what was happening and they started om-ing
> joined hands and approached the blockade from the other side. We are lucky
> no one got shot. I heard later that the om circle was almost complete when
> the giddyups busted through at a gallup and then all the leo vehicles sped
> off with there sirens blazing and lights flashing. We could hear the
> cheering over the radio's, it was awesome, but only temporary. All the
> leo's left for awhile ( I think to lick their wounds and regroup) But a
> 1\2 dozen vehicles came back at dusk and
> harrased and few of our elders (they're still trying to find someone to
> sign thier damn permit). When I left it seemed like they set up a smaller
> roadblock and they were arresting somebody so I got out without being
> hassled. But on the drive down to steamboat I passed three leo's with
> lights and sirens heading back to the site (I think I passed a few more
> that didn't have teir lights on but I can't be sure. Anyway the seige is
> still on till someone signs and so far no one will. Will post more
> tommorow if I can, it's late, 3:30am got to go to sleep
> now.........................love & peace..........sleepy

Hey, all: This Friday night, I will be hosting the fourth annual Erotic Music and Poetry Festivus at Alwun House, on the corner of 12th Street and Roosevelt!

For those of you who don't know, Alwun House hosts an annual Exotic (Erotic) Art show from Mid-Feb to Mid-March. Opening night is loaded with wild entertainment and a couple of years ago they decided to add a second night, featuring erotic poets and dirty musicians.

I responded to the call. Now I'm host.

AND WHAT A NIGHT IT'S GONNA BE!

Here are the featured performers for the evening:

Me: Whatever it is I do (hear me do a bunch of crowd favorites, plus songs of mine you'll NEVER hear me do in a coffeehouse)
Kara Kay -- A compelling erotic performance from one of the most talented and original people in Phoenix
Melissa Billings -- Bellydance, Burlesque and more;
Violet Hayes -- Erotic Stories
Shirley Runyon and "Top" -- Erotic Haiku "Under Duress"
Steve Crompton and assistant -- Free Ass Caricatures! Some artist do faces, but Steve will caricature your butt! All models get a free copy of one of Steve's many erotic comic books!
The Charltons -- Sexual Politic Poetry to Music
Gavan Wieser -- Bawdy Songs. (Gavan is the main songwriter and guitar player for the world's oldest punk band, "One Foot in the Grave." )
Dave Cook -- DIrty Ditties
Michelle Ceballos of Opendance -- Dance

And just added: ROBERT X PLANET and LUCY LAMODE, of the fabled local 80s band KILLER PUSSY, will be joining forces for only the second time since the band broke up to perform at this show! DAMN!

How can you resist? You can't. Hors d'ouvres and drinks will be available! Feel free to dress any way you wish, as this IS an erotic show!

TIME: 8:00 p.m.
Cost: $8 advance, $10 at the door and worth every penny.
Location once again: Alwun House, NW corner of 12th St. and Roosevelt in the much-nicer-than-it-was-just-a-few-years-ago Garfield historical district. This is definitely "Bring-a-date" stuff. Over 21 only.

Hope to see you this Friday!

BLOODY FRIDAY
OK YOU HEARD AUGUST'S FIRST FRIDAY WAS GOING TO BE A FRIENDLY "EDUCATIONAL" DRIVE BY POLICE - NONE OF US KNEW IT WAS REALLY A PREEMPTIVE STRIKE, "With a multi-tiered and multi-jurisdictional initiative to eliminate the use of our buildings as art spaces." (Roosevelt Row e-notice)

TV, Radio, AP wire service, even on the cover of the Arizona Republic gave heads-up the Thursday before. re:Phoenix Police will "educate" Artlink's Aug 5 First Friday's patrons and visitors (no parking, under-age drinking, vendors blocking sidewalk, pedistrian traffic safety (Artlink's First Friday attracts between 10,000 to 15,000 artwalker's visiting over 80 art spaces, spread out between Roosevelt Row's 7th Street to Grandevelt's 15th Avenue, Grand Avenue from 7th to 16th Ave.

We were expecting to have a pleasant follow-up meeting with police, to discuss the results from Aug 5 First Friday police "educational" drive-by's and together we were looking at working together to develop a long-range strategy for a successful outcome of downtown's "Strategic Vision": we were told, police "don't want to kill First Friday, it's a needed component for downtown vitality."

THAT WAS THEN, THIS IS NOW!
OK we're responsible citizens, creative business types, and family-friendly folks - we are downtown, we live and breath downtown, we have staked our livelihoods on our entrepreneurial vision to evolve a livelihood from our creative passions... we've already paid our dues with years of sweat blood and tears. So why can't we stay on the same page, evolved and recorded by Council approved "DOWNTOWN PHOENIX: A STRATEGIC VISION AND BLUEPRINT FOR THE FUTURE (12/14/04)

What shock and awe we experienced Bloody First Friday: we witnessed Downtown Art Galleries assaulted by police-escorted multiple-agency types, each with educational brochures, citation books and notepads, AND BADGES.

The Following are excerpts from Roosevelt Row Gallery Owner, Greg Esser's Sunday Aug 7th e-notice:
On Thursday, August 4, 2005 the police held a press event and stated that their purpose and intent was to monitor underage drinking, open container violations and parking issues related to the event. This was essentially the message that was reported in the local media. The enforcement effort that the City of Phoenix actually launched and that is currently underway is in fact far broader.

Various inspectors and enforcement officials from the City of Phoenix and Maricopa County entered our business regularly throughout the evening each accompanied by armed police officers.

The inspections we received through the course of the evening included:
The Fire Marshall in plain clothes
Maricopa County Health Inspectors (food)
Zoning Enforcement officials (occupancy regulations)
Tax Enforcement officials (privilege and sales tax)
Neighborhood Services (blight violations, various City of Phoenix code violations)

There were others who would not disclose their affiliation when asked directly.

Further, we were officially notified by a City of Phoenix citations investigator from the Development Services Department on Thursday, August 4, 2005 that our use of our building as an art gallery is illegal. Despite the fact that our building has been used as an art gallery for more than thirty years as evidenced by documents submitted to the City of Phoenix, the citations investigator has arbitrarily stated that our continuing use of the building as a gallery is a “change of use.” The “change of use” requires a new Certificate of Occupancy. In order to obtain a new Certificate of Occupancy, a building must meet current city building code which is not possible for our structure given the historic nature of its construction and the size of our lot. Our situation is typical of many of the art studios and venues downtown now being targeted for code enforcement by the City of Phoenix.

The “change of use” citations are a new and questionable tactic being used by the City of Phoenix as part of a multi-tiered and multi-jurisdictional initiative to eliminate the use of our buildings as art spaces.

If you are a registered voter in any of these districts, please let your elected representative know now that this is an important issue that affects not only the arts in downtown but the health and vibrancy of our state’s capitol.

If you know a bureaucrat or manager within the city - or a news reporter - please...Talk To Them; seek out information... who's initiating this crack-down? is there a bigger developer behind this? (call Greg at 515 Gallery, or your Artlink Representative, or reply to this e-mail your interest to help resolve this crisis).

This incredibly blunderous shake-up shatters our confidence in the "comprehensive consensus building" touted by Mayor Gordon our 21st Century 6th largest city, with 2004's Council Approved, "DOWNTOWN PHOENIX: A STRATEGIC VISION AND BLUEPRINT FOR THE FUTURE..." a vision that looks pretty hallow right now. Perhaps we should reconsider our support for next Fall's Bond Election... Remember the Stadium we stopped?

We will continue to provide you with updates and let you know what you can do to help us through this plight and protect the flourishing arts in downtown against this government intrusion and attack.

Alwun House Foundation
building a stronger community through the arts

Purple, Italic Text above, was extracted from yesterday's e-mail notice from Greg Esser, 515 Gallery owner, Roosevelt Row association.

New Times "Belly Up" Article Fri, June 24, 2005 - 11:03 PM
Recently I had (what I thought was) the good fortune to be interviewed by the New Times' Joe Watson about a performance at the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art's "Splash" event. The reporter spoke with me by phone in an interview that lasted about 20 minutes and covered many questions about the event and bellydance in general. When I saw the final, edited article in the paper today I was not feeling at all fortunate. Answers to several different questions were strung together in a very inacurate, misleading and (in my opinion) negative way.

Mr. Watson started off the interview by asking me if what we had planned was typical for Valley bellydance venues. I told him no, it wasn't. At most restaurant shows you will see one dancer in a solo show. We had planned a 3-dancer choreography that included some solos with different props.

Mr. Watson informed me he hadn't seen much bellydancing himself. He proceeded to tell me that SMoCA Nights usually have a very "clubby" feel and can be kind of racy- did I think we'd fit in there? He beat around this point for a while - I wasn't sure where he was going. Then, I asked him if what he really wanted to know was 'is it sexy enough?'. He sounded relieved and laughed and said - yeah, that's what he was getting at.

I told him that, unfortunately, the American public has the image of bellydancer as borderline stripper and that is not what Arabic dance is about. I told him we planned on doing a classic Arabic show with traditional props. I explained that bellydance is sensual but should not be overtly sexual. Sensuality is ok in traditional bellydance, in-your-face sexy is not.

After that, Mr. Watson went back to the "is this going to be boring" line of questioning. I described our piece to him - 25 minutes with a mix of music - some upbeat and energetic and some slow, a folkloric piece and a drum solo as well. The music is like an emotional ride - happy, romantic, folksy and enthusiastic. Because of that mix - it would not be a 'boring show' - even at 25 minutes long.

Hind sight is always 20-20 and I suppose I should have paid attention to the little flash that went off in my brain about halfway into the interview. I was recalling a New Times article a couple years ago that highlighted a particular Tempe restaurant and it's entertainment. The writer's tone toward our art was cheap and insulting. I am just as disappointed in this article.

I would like to apologize to the dance community for any confusion or unintentional insult as a result of Mr. Watson's patchwork journalism style. We are lucky to have many fine dancers here in the Valley putting on a respectable show - perhaps Mr. Watson should get out more.

My question to those bitching about it, especially the newcomers to Arizona, is why the hell did you move here if you don't like heat? I mean, it's not a big secret that Arizona gets very hot. We're in the middle of a friggin' desert for crying out loud. Did you not stop to think about the consequences of where you were moving BEFORE you moved here? I know I did.

I for one can tolerate the heat. Yes, it can be uncomfortable if you're stuck out in it, but for most of the day, I'm inside in air conditioning. When I do have to go out in it, I'm thankful it is a dry heat. I grew up in a very humid climate in the midwest. A 90˚ day back there was much more miserable than a 105˚ day here.

I'm sorry for the rant, but I'm sick of all the bitching about the heat. Wake up people! You live in Arizona. If you don't like the heat, MOVE!
